J. Johannsen & Sohn is a family owned company founded in 1896.

Representing the 5th generation Michael Schaefer (born 1971) joined the management in October 2007.

Despite being a niche player in the towage industry J. Johannsen & Sohn will strategically focus on

  • Being a preferred supplier of harbor and terminal operations,
  • Performing safe and reliable oversea transports,
  • Controlled growth into offshore segments.

“Aiming to operate with extreme precision, highest technical standards, safety, sustainability, flexibility and last not least very motivated young crews we allow ourselves to take the next step into a new towage generation.”

Maritime knowhow and many stable contacts into the industry enables J. Johannsen & Sohn a wider spread into new services:

  1. HQSE Consulting
  2. Software based “Casualty Management” at sea and ashore – development – implementation – consulting
  3. Nautical / technical shipmanagement

Rounding up our business we are operating mooring services, cargo lashing / securing and stevedoring activities in the ports of Luebeck and Wismar.

HISTORY

The shipping company was founded by Captain Joachim Johannsen and his son Eduard in Lübeck in 1896. Their service was including supply of lighters and own steam barges to assist sailing ships in fairways on the river Trave, discharging and transferring cargo to quaysides and towing vessels to various jetties in port.

J. Johannsen & Sohn has endured two world wars and many other difficult times as small private enterprise.

Last but not the least, closing of both the coal-fired power plants, as well as the smelter and the

four dockyards in Lübeck compelled the company to develop other supporting legs.

With constant adaptation to the needs of the modern shipping industry, establishment of coastal towing service, stevedoring, cargo lashing and vessel mooring services in some Baltic ports, it succeeded to hold out with modern tugboats this very day.

Moreover, since the 70s and even up to now Johannsen arranged for platform logistics, oil transports in barges, crew transfers and offshore towage services.

Our today’s new business has been solidly built on tradition, experience and conservative acting for over one hundred years.
